Circus artist Hedda Liukkala’s solo piece Mitämeri is a collection of stories about the underwater reality, where plastic has become an unchanging part of the world. It is a statement on the climate crisis and an expression of uncertainty future.

Liukkala has written modern mythology around a current problem. The story mixes the modern world, tales inspired by ancient Finns, and the drama of the ancient god mythologies.

In the solo performance, contemporary circus (acrobatics and Cyr wheel), physical theatre and neo-burlesque are used as means of bodily expression.

Space Ocean is Hedda Liukkala’s dramatic cyr-ring performance, which combines contemporary circus with strong visuality through the movement of translucent plastics. A 6 x 6 m area and a flat floor surface are required for this five-minute long show.

Primeval Sea is Hedda Liukkala’s burlesque number that combines intense presence, striking visuals and dramatic atmosphere. A six-minute performance only requires an area of 2 x 2 m, but the piece can take over a larger stage, too. Primeval Sea is part of the Mitämeri piece and it has been seen also e.g. as part of the musician Mechanic Membrane’s festival gigs.
