De Profundis is based on the interaction between visual arts, contemporary circus, performance art and sound. The artists balance between paradoxical emotions that overwhelm and the emptiness they create. The work draws inspiration from Oscar Wilde’s essay De Profundis, written for his lover from prison – in particular its emotional intensity and outrageous bitterness.

Materiality is a key element in the work: the sculptor frames the work with a metal and wood sculpture installation, inside and outside of which circus artists and a musician perform. All the works are circus instruments and musical instruments: the sounds of the work are made live by playing the sculptures and the aerial acrobatics and object manipulation are performed using parts of the sculpture installation.

Among the materials, metal is linked to the social dimension of the work: in De Profundis, it is cold, hard and sometimes sharpened, yet it softens through sound and touch, producing surprising, sentimental tones in the work. The meaning of wood comes into focus as the modern mind: dead, fragmented pieces nailed and clamped together, broken and overloaded, but still trying to hold themselves together.
